North by NorthWest is a network of publicly funded visual arts organisations who have come together to support, promote and develop the contemporary visual arts in Lancashire and Cumbria.

North by NorthWest was established in early 2009.  We consist of twelve member organisations of very different sizes, structures and offers.  However, we are all passionate about the contemporary visual arts offer within the sub region and its place within the national and international context. North by NorthWest is a constituted group and is sector led; if you have an interest in the work of North by NorthWest and feel that you or your organisation would like to be involved please contact us.  We are one of three Turning Point groups in the North West region and are working with VAiL and CVAM in order to ensure coordinated representation within the Turning Point National Network for the North West region as a whole.

Our strategy for 2010/2011 is to build a more powerful, sustainable, effective and international contemporary visual arts sector in Lancashire and Cumbria.  Our key aims are:

  • To better understand the strengths and weaknesses of members and their organisations
  • To gather evidence to understand and demonstrate the economic, social and cultural impact of our work
  • To develop a coherent and strong voice enabling us to better represent contemporary visual arts at an inter/national level
